Women Health Care On World Health Day

The World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated every year on 7 April, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO) and other related organizations. The most important aspect of World Health is Women Health Care.

The focus of World Health Day 2019 is achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). UHC is focused on ensuring all people and communities have access to quality health services where and when they need them, without suffering from financial hardship. It includes the full spectrum of services needed throughout life, from health promotion to prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care and is best based on a strong primary health care system.

It is wonderful to see how various countries have made tremendous progress in making health care accessible to their people over the past few decades. But there still remains a huge chunk of the global women population who are still far from close to receiving the basic health care services.

It is always said, self-help is the best help. The safety of our health finally falls down in our own responsible hands. It is the primary duty of every individual to respect their body and take utmost care of their precious health.

Women experience unique health care challenges than men and hence it is important that every woman has access to knowledge about the spectrum of health issues and guidance on their timely prevention.

On the occasion of Global Health Awareness day, here are a few health care tips for all the beautiful women out there.

General Lifestyle Awareness

  1. Stay fit by exercising regularly and make sure you maintain ideal body weight. These two factors go a long way in the prevention of diseases.
  2. Eat healthily, add plenty of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. Avoiding junk food and eating out can help combat unnecessary health trouble since, often such diet is full of salt, sugar, fat, and calories, and are definitely lighter on protein and fiber. Keep it a point to drink 2-3 litres of water daily, without fail.
  3. Going for regular health checkup with a Gynaecologist is definitely a big yes. If you have any family history or high-risk factors, it is always good to consult with your doctor early.
  4. Reduce stress, practice breathing and meditate regularly. These basic habits can help improve your mood and act as natural painkillers.
  5.  Sleep well. Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout one’s life. Getting enough quality sleep at the right times can help protect your mental and physical health while giving a boost to your quality of life

Age-specific Advice

    1. Puberty / Adolescence

    • Menstruation is one of the vital processes of a woman's body which deserves utmost caution and care. Ensuring proper Menstrual Hygiene and eating right is the key to ease the pain and reduce the risk of infections
    • It is important to educate and provide Safe Sex advice to your daughters and sisters at the right time for them to have a safe and healthy life
    • Vaccination against cervical cancer for young girls aged 12 and above is strictly recommended.

     2. Adult: 20-30yrs

    • Make sure you make proper use of birth control methods. Avoid I Pill usage on a regular basis as this has many side effects.
    • If you experience any form of Menstrual irregularities (commonly due to polycystic ovaries or thyroid disorders), visit a gynaecologist and do the necessary tests (ultrasound /hormone tests) as advised.
    • It is always better to plan your pregnancy at optimum age and health.
    • Consider taking preconception folic acid tablets to get healthy babies.
    • Regular Pap smears from age 25-65 yrs once in  3 years are advisable to detect any cervical infection and run proper treatments before it can proceed to cancer cervix.
    • It is good to regularly do a self-examination of your breasts and go for mammography after the age of 40 yrs. It is always advisable to detect breast changes at the earliest before it goes on to develop breast cancer.

   3. Age Group: (around menopause)

    •  If you have heavy flow during periods, immediately get it checked with your gynaecologist and get an ultrasound and endometrial biopsy if advised.
    • Any White discharge, itching vulva is not normal. If any, consult with your gynaecologist.
    • Stay updated and follow Preventive advice on menopause.

  4. Menopause

    • It is confirmed after you miss your period for 12 months. The average age of menopause is 50 yrs.
    • Maintain ideal weight and exercise regularly to reduce the menopausal hot flushes, mood swings, and other related symptoms.
    • Any postmenopausal bleeding can be a warning sign of cancer so get it checked immediately with ultrasound and biopsy.
    • Any recent bloating/ change in bowel habits warrant urgent ultrasound to rule out ovarian cancer.

In order to move towards a brighter and healthier future, it is pivotal to recognize why addressing the well-being of women is becoming more and more important in our everyday life. Women’s well-being doesn’t only comprise physical care but also emotional and psychological welfare because it can have a direct impact on our homes and communities.

Women's health is an important topic that has been neglected in the past but not anymore. It is time that women take full responsibility for their own health and growth.

Women empowerment begins with women’s awareness of their own physical and emotional health. Building Women Health Care awareness among all sections of society is the key step towards realizing the full potential of womanhood in the future.
